Favorite Mac apps

22 Apr 2008

Michael is finally joining the modern world and switching to Mac and invited people to submit their favorite / essential Mac apps.

Here’s my list:

  • Firefox – duh
  • Adium – chat
  • iTerm – terminal (Leopard’s version is usable but I like iTerm shortcuts and other features better
  • Mail – sufficient but wish it had a calendar other than iCal
  • TextMate $$ – text editor (not free, but worth it) – try TextWrangler for an ok free editor
  • Quicksilver – app launching and more
  • NeoOffice – very decent for word processing and office stuff
  • KeyNote $$ – must have for presentations
  • iStat – menu bar stats
  • Growl – system notification, integrates with many above
  • Colloquy – irc
  • NetNewsWire – rss
  • Audacity – audio editing
  • Audio Hijack $$ – swiping audio from any app
  • Senuti – move songs off your iPod onto a different computer (senuti == reverse(itunes))
  • ByteController – iTunes control from the menu bar, probably something better out there
  • coconutBattery – for those obsessed with battery performance
  • CoRD – a better Remote Desktop for Windows access
  • OmniGraffle $$ – drawing program, totally worth the cash, check out all the Omni apps
  • TinyAlarm – a wonderful tiny menu bar alarm clock
  • Zoom – a player for interactive fiction files like Zork :)
