Nifty Firefox search trick

25 Oct 2007

There’s a really nice feature in Firefox that I think a lot of people are unaware of that allows you to create new keywords you can use in your url bar. I like to do this for stuff like JIRA search, wiki search, etc.

Simply go to some page (here is our JIRA page) and right-click on the search field itself:

Choose “Add a Keyword for this Search…” which will bring up a dialog you can fill in:

The keyword is what you will use in the url bar and the value you pass will be put into the search field and the form will be submitted. So, you can then do something like this:

which will take you right to a particular JIRA without ever typing a url! This same trick works for any single-field form. Maybe there are other things you can do with it but that’s been enough for me.
